Ramon

When you came to the United States were you ever discriminated or looked down upon by others? If so, how did that make you feel?
For the long years that I have been living in the United States, I have encountered discrimination and this made me feel very sad as well as it made me feel enraged. At the beginning I felt left out since I had come from a different country. I thought I just needed to be more integrated into the American culture, but as I tried to talk to people, some Americans thought they were superior than me because of how I spoke English and with an accent as well as where I came from. At first I thought that some people were just close minded and till this day I still believe it is true. The Americans that I would try talking to did not care what I had to say, and did not care about my culture that I valued, because I was not an American and did not speak proper English.

  1. I've actually known about this because he spoke about it to the class. I think it is so unfair how they treat people based on their culture and where they come from. It should be based on their personality.

  2. I think it is really unfair that people judge you because of where you came from. People should judge you on how you are as a person, not your nationality. It is really sad that this type of discrimination happens every day.

  3. I like this because I can relate. Sometimes being in a new place can be tough especially being in a place and not knowing the language. Not giving up and fighting to belong here is what I like the most

  4. This more often than anyone thinks. Some people will judge you from where you come from and will not bother to get to know you. People should judge on personality.

  6. I think this is something I can really relate to, coming form a Hispanic household. Some individuals forget to think twice before they discriminate against other human beings because of the way they speak or where they come from. I am very glad that Ramon has not allowed negative comments and people affect his life because he is one of the best teachers I have ever had.

  8. I relate to this experience, since I come from a different country too. People will stare at you if you don't look, speak or think the same way they do. And that's sad but also annoying because we don't need to change to please others.

  10. Sadly, this isn't the first time Iv'e heard of people getting discriminated or looked down on because of their background. The fact that this still happens is disappointing. Though, with good work down between communities maybe something can change.

  12. It sucks that there is still discrimination in the world. I know people that have gotten discriminated. People should be more open to new ideas.
